School for Advanced Studies (SAS)

The Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) are programs designed throughout LAUSD to improve the development and education of gifted and talented students. These schools receive funding from LAUSD to provide professional development and resources to teachers, articulated programs for gifted students, and additional resources for parents of gifted students.

Palms is one of nine middle schools in LAUSD Local District West participating in the Schools for Advanced Studies program (see list of SAS schools).

Unlike the Magnet program, acceptance to an SAS does not include transportation to/from school, even if you are miles from the campus.

Who Qualifies for SAS?

Students are eligible to apply for a transfer from their school of residence to a School for Advanced Studies under three circumstances:

  1. If their school of residence verifies that they have demonstrated the ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level in academic subjects, and that they have demonstrated ability in four critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in their primary language:
    • Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity.
    • Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information.
    • Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar mathematical problems.
    • Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express creative ideas.
  2. If they score in the "Exceeds Standards" range on the SBAC assessment or have TOTAL national scores of 85% or above on an LAUSD-approved standardized achievement test.
  3. If they have been identified as gifted/talented by an LAUSD school psychologist in the Intellectual, High Achievement, Specific Academic, Creative, or Leadership Ability Categories.

Who Needs to Apply

Students who live in the Palms Middle School attendance boundaries do not need to fill out an application. Honors/Gifted students will automatically be placed in the SAS/Honors classes.

If you are not sure if you are in the Palms attendance area, check with your child's elementary school. You can also check it yourself by typing your home address into the LAUSD Resident School Identifier to see if Palms is your home school.

The SAS application period is Friday April 1 through Friday April 29, 2016, with notifications in May 2016.

Dates:

  • Application period: Tuesday April 7, 2015 through Thursday April 30, 2015.
  • Deadline: Thursday April 30, 2015 (after that date you will be put on a waiting list)
  • Notifications: Parents will be notified of the status of their application starting Monday May 11, 2015.

Important: If Palms Middle School is your home school then you DO NOT need to submit an SAS application.

You can print these files yourself, or ask for printed copies in the Main Office, Student Services Office, or Counseling Office (see campus map). For more information see the LAUSD SAS website.

The SAS Application Process

  1. Once applications are available, download and print the form or ask for a copy at the Main Office, Student Services Office, or Counseling Office (see campus map).
  2. Complete the application.
  3. Make sure that all items on the application are complete and provide supporting documentation: standardized test scores in the Advanced Range, Gifted Verification, report cards, letters of recommendation, etc.
  4. Have the application signed by the principal of the school that your child is currently attending.
  5. Include a self-addressed envelope with your application. A blank envelope is included in the application packet.
  6. Bring the application to Palms, along with a utility bill (not a phone bill) to verify your address. Students must live within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
  7. Watch for notification of acceptance by mail.
  8. If your child is accepted, come to Palms to complete the enrollment packet.

Important!

  • Submit your application as early as possible.
  • Submit your application by the due date.
  • Be sure to return the self-addressed envelope with your application.
  • There is no transportation provided in the SAS program. Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to and from school daily.
