Students in the Palms attendance area can attend Palms as their home (neighborhood) school. Palms is also the home of a Gifted/High Ability Magnet School and a School for Advanced Studies (SAS), sharing the campus, facilities, and educational programs.
Qualifying home school students are selected for the Honors program, which is academically equivalent to the Magnet Program. The difference is administrative, with Honors classes within the Regular School and its budget and the Magnet School having a separate budget. Core magnet and non-magnet classes have the same curriculum but are taught separately. Home school and Magnet School students are mixed for electives and for Physical Education.
The academic and social environment at Palms, the experienced and dedicated faculty and staff, the high test scores, the enrichment opportunities and events for parents and families, and active support organizations and the Friends of Palms booster club combine to make Palms the best middle school in Los Angeles.
