Fun Fact

There are more possible chess games than there are atoms in the universe!

Chess Club

Chess Club

Some middle schools have a Chess Club and others do not. Palms Middle School has two!

Sixth Grade Chess Club / Game Club

Chess Club for 6th graders meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Room 160 during lunch.

There are chess beginners as well as Chess Masters who like to teach chess to others. Everyone learns by playing chess and having fun. We don't use timers so everyone plays at their own pace.

All 6th grade students are welcome to come to Chess Club. No signups are necessary. Chess Club usually starts the second or third week of school in the Fall.

Volunteers to help teach chess are always welcome too.

Chess Club is also Game Club. Students play other games such as Connect Four, Sorry, and Mancala.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Chess Club

Chess Club for 7th and 8th graders meets every day in Room 112 during lunch period. No food is allowed.

All 7th and 8th grade students are welcome to sign up in Room 112. Students do not have to attend every day, but must play at least one match a week to stay in the Competition Ladder.

Each student has a win-loss-draw record and has a position on the Competition Ladder. Here's how it works:

  • All new players are placed at the bottom of the ladder.
  • If you beat a higher ranked opponent, you move up the ladder.
  • If you lose to a lower ranked opponent, you move down the ladder.

Chess Club will have periodic tournaments, with brackets based on Competition Ladder positions, NCAA style.
